The historic old town is a delight to explore on foot, with narrow lanes, flower-filled balconies and pretty squares lined with cafés. At its heart stands the 13th-century Castillo de Luna, now home to the town hall, alongside the elegant parish church of Nuestra Señora de la O. A gentle stroll along the seafront promenade leads to Playa de la Costilla, a wide sandy beach just steps from the old town, while Playa del Rompidillo offers more space to relax by the Atlantic.
Food is very much part of life in Rota. Fresh fish and seafood come straight from the local port, and the town is proud of its signature dish, urta a la roteña, a local fish slowly cooked in a rich tomato and pepper sauce. The local Tintilla de Rota, a sweet red wine made from a grape grown in the area for centuries, is the perfect way to round off a long, leisurely dinner.
Rota also makes an ideal base for exploring the wider region. The sherry bodegas of Jerez de la Frontera, the ancient port city of Cádiz, the hilltop White Villages and the grand monuments of Seville are all within easy reach, giving you the best of Andalusia while returning each evening to the calm of the coast.
