Rising dramatically from a rocky headland above the Gulf of Asinara, Castelsardo is one of Italy's most beautiful medieval villages and a jewel of Sardinia's northern coast. A tangle of cobbled lanes winds up to the 12th-century Doria Castle, where sweeping views stretch across the sea towards Corsica on a clear day. It's the kind of place that rewards slow wandering, an aperitivo at sunset and a genuine taste of island life.
The historic centre spirals up the hillside in a maze of stone alleyways, archways and sun-bleached houses. At the summit, the Castello dei Doria houses the Museum of Mediterranean Basket Weaving, a nod to the craft Castelsardo is famous for you'll still see local women weaving palm and reed baskets in doorways. Nearby, the Cathedral of Sant'Antonio Abate perches right at the cliff's edge, its bell tower looking out over the bay.
Golden sands and clear turquoise water are never far away. Lu Bagnu and Ampurias offer easy, family-friendly swimming close to town, while a short drive reveals quieter coves and the wind-sculpted Roccia dell'Elefante. Seafood takes centre stage in the local trattorias, from just caught lobster to crisp Vermentino from the surrounding hills, best enjoyed as the evening lights come up across the harbour.

I couldn’t possibly choose which season I prefer, I’ve skied since I was 5 years old and I can never get enough but there’s also something really magical about the spending the summer on Lake Garda.
