Known as the ‘Eternal City’, Rome is steeped in history, artistic grandeur and impressive architecture. It is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Delicious food, artistic treasures and historic legacy construct the very fabric of this magnificent city. Italy’s capital was once the very centre of power, culture and religion. This compelling history endows the city with its unique sense of importance. It is bursting with historical sights extraordinary enough to impress more than just the history buff. The city of Rome will leave you in awe.

Rome can be divided into a few individual districts. The modern centre of Rome is where many of the hotels, shops and restaurants are located as well as the famous Via Veneto, home to the Trevi Fountain. The historic centre of Rome, on the other hand, is much smaller. It captures the essence of the Renaissance in the form of its architecture, beautiful squares and stunning cathedrals. We recommend strolling through Old Rome on foot, exploring its narrow streets and indulging in the delicious cuisine in its laid-back trattorias.

Rome has a truly impressive artistic heritage and is beaming with some of the greatest masterpieces that have graced our world. It has enticed and inspired artists for centuries. Its churches are overflowing with art, its medieval piazzas boast beautiful baroque facades and its streets are home to sculptures by Michelangelo.

Don’t miss some of Rome’s most profound attractions. The Colosseum, The Pantheon, The Trevi Fountain, St. Peter’s Square, The Spanish Steps and The Sistine Chapel are famous for good reason. However, do try and experience Rome’s Mediterranean rhythm and relaxing atmosphere. Enjoy its street side cafes, unwind in the pretty piazzas and sample its vibrant nightlife.

Things to do in Rome

    Visit the Ancient Roman Forum

An impressive – if rather confusing – sprawl of ruins, the Roman Forum was ancient Rome's showpiece centre, a grandiose district of temples, basilicas and vibrant public spaces. The site, originally a marshy burial ground, was first developed in the 7th century BC, growing over time to become the social, political and commercial hub of the Roman empire. Signature sights include the Arco di Settimio Severo, the Curia, the Tempio di Saturno and the Arco di Tito.

    Visit the Colosseum

Rome’s great gladiatorial arena is the most thrilling of the city's ancient sights. Inaugurated in AD 80, the 50,000-seat Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, was originally clad in travertine and covered by a huge canvas awning. Inside, tiered seating encircled the arena, itself built over an underground complex where animals were caged and stage sets prepared. Games involved gladiators fighting wild animals or each other.

Two thousand years on and it's Italy's top tourist attraction.

    Visit St. Peter's Basilica

In this city of outstanding churches, none can hold a candle to St Peter's, Italy’s largest, richest and most spectacular basilica. Built atop a 4th-century church, it was consecrated in 1626 after 120 years' construction. Its lavish interior contains many spectacular works of art, including three of Italy's most celebrated masterpieces: Michelangelo’s Pietà, his soaring dome, and Bernini’s 29m-high baldachin over the papal altar.

Expect queues and note that strict dress codes are enforced (no shorts, miniskirts or bare shoulders).

    Visit the Sistine Chapel

Home to two of the world’s most famous works of art – Michelangelo’s ceiling frescoes (1508–12) and his Giudizio Universale (Last Judgment; 1536–41) – the Sistine Chapel is the one part of the Vatican Museums that everyone wants to see, and on a busy day you could find yourself sharing it with up to 2000 people. Michelangelo's ceiling design, which is best viewed from the chapel’s main entrance in the far east wall, covers the entire 800-sq-m surface.
