Known as the 'Pearl of the Andaman,' Phuket is the largest of the islands off Thailand's southern coastline and a great base from which to explore the other islands nearby. It's extremely popular with tourists thanks to its beautiful sandy beaches, beach huts, cafés, restaurants and some of the best diving and snorkelling in the world. If you feel like a change from lying on a sun-drenched beach, there are plenty of diversions both on the coast and inland. Head to the Khoa Sok National Park for an unforgettable jungle experience, complete with elephants and lazy rivers.

BEST TIME TO VISIT PHUKET

The Andaman coastline has a tropical climate, which means it's warm all year round, but the periods of April-May and September-October are the hottest. The periods between November-March and June-August are generally considered the best times to visit. However, while the heavier rains in September-October can be a little disruptive, this part of Thailand enjoys a temperate zone and rarely has several consecutive days of heavy rain.

TOP THINGS TO DO

GO ELEPHANT HILL TREKKING

Experience the ultimate adventure trekking deep into the highlands on the back of an elephant and enjoy superb views over Chalong Bay.

VISIT PHI PHI BY SPEEDBOAT

It's worth taking a 45-minute cruise by luxury speedboat to Phi Phi Island. Explore the magical Maya Bay where the movie The Beach was filmed, enjoy snorkelling and sightseeing and relax with a leisurely lunch by the beach.

PHANG NGA HONG STARLIGHT CAVE TOUR

Paddle a canoe through hushed, naturally lit caves and beautiful blue lagoons, see a sunset like no other and enjoy stargazing and a sumptuous Thai buffet on the boat ride back to Phuket.

FANTASEA

This is a stunning 140-acre theme park packed with activities, carnivals, handicrafts, a 4,000-seat restaurant serving Thai fusion food, shops and theatrical extravaganzas.

PHUKET AQUARIUM

The local bus service runs to Phuket Aquarium about 13km from the resort centre. Home to thousands of colourful and exotic fish. Stroll through a tunnel running through a giant tank for a kaleidoscopic view of these fascinating marine creatures.

INDULGE IN A SPA TREATMENT
Thailand is world renowned for its traditional massages and spa treatments which have evolved from the Asian traditions of meditation, respect for nature and the desire for physical and mental wellbeing. You won't have to travel far to enjoy some truly relaxing treatments as most hotels and resorts offer state-of-the-art natural healing and spa facilities and holistic therapies.

FESTIVAL FEVER
You may like to time your trip to coincide with some of the island's many festivals, including Loy Krathong (Festival of Lights) in November, with its floating 'leaf-boats' sent bobbing out to sea, gently flickering as they go, or the colourful nine-day Vegetarian Festival in late September/early October.
