Ringed by snow-capped, forested mountains sweeping down to miles of sandy beaches, the bustling west coast sea port of Vancouver enjoys one of the most scenic backdrops of any city in the world, often features as the backdrop for filming. Renowned for scenic beauty, Vancouver is just over 100 years old, this is a young, vibrant, ethnically diverse, cosmopolitan city with leafy parks, striking modern buildings, a busy port and marina, great restaurants and lively bars. This city truly has it all!
As a city the appeal of Vancouver has been recognised as it has received many awards including the top city in Canada in Travel & Leisure magazine 2014 World's Best Awards. The city was also named the Top Destination in Canada in TripAdvisor's 2014 Travellers' Choice awards, and was chosen as the world's "Most Liveable City" in 2010 by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), a title it has been awarded eight times since 2002. An impressive list of awards!
Vancouver is known for its temperate climate. With its promise of warmer weather, summer is the most popular time to visit Vancouver, but if you can find the time spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are also good as the weather is mild and the city less crowded. If you're a winter sports fan, then the winter temperatures won't deter you as the city is the gateway to the world-class ski resort of Whistler/Blackcomb. Vancouver offers something different as it is one of the few places in the world where it is possible to ski in the morning and sail in the afternoon, a unique combination.
Vancouver offers visitors both outstanding opportunities for outdoor adventure and the sophisticated amenities of a world-class city. Walk along the seawall or stroll through forested trails in Stanley Park, or view British Columbia as depicted in the brilliant canvases of Emily Carr at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Ride on a mini-ferry on False Creek, check out the markets, or hit the shops on Robson Street, West 4th Avenue or Ambleside. Granville Island is a lovely, laid-back district filled with an artisan market, galleries, cafes and restaurants, while Yaletown has quickly established itself as a third zone, with swanky cocktail bars and clubs.
Set between mountains and ocean with an outdoor-loving population, Vancouver is full of activities for those who want to enjoy life to the full. You can fish, hike and camp, while in winter skiers and snowboarders are drawn to the local slopes of Whistler/Blackcomb. There's an abundance of golf courses, watersports (kayaking, surfing, T'ashii Paddle School) cycling and running trails.
Granville Island Public Market offers a fascinating assortment of colourful stalls, showcasing unique homemade products and the very finest in gastronomic delights. Fresh produce is the key either from the ocean, the oven or the field. In addition to the essential Granville Island Public Market, Vancouver has a number of permanent and weekly summer markets stocked with artisan goods, fashion, jewellery and lots more.
Vancouver's hinterland in British Columbia produces excellent wine. One such area is the Fraser Valley which is a thriving agricultural area, located close to Vancouver. Follow the winding country roads of Richmond, Langley, Fort Langley and Abbotsford to discover small, family-run wineries, artisan food producers and numerous intriguing historic sites.
Families will be enthralled by a multitude of activities such as whale-watching in Victoria as well as the many child-centred attractions of Granville Island. Looking for that something a little different, why not experience 'Tide Rip Grizzly Tours' where you get to see grizzly bears in the wilds of Knight Inlet. Covered boat tours depart daily from Telegraph Cove, the whale watching centre on northern Vancouver Island. Watch grizzly bears eat salmon & eagles pick up the scraps. You may also see sea birds, this is certainly a tour with a difference!
