Known as the ‘Pearl of Puglia’, this beautiful fishing town has a distinctly sophisticated feel and the marina provides a wonderful spot to walk, watching the boats and yachts bob in the harbour.

Trani is located around 43km away from Bari on the Adriatic Sea and is one of Puglia's more flourishing centres. Overlooking the sea like an elegant pale-stone amphitheatre, it features a recently restored small port, the town's crowning jewel. Trani boasts an important history due to its key role as a port either for Crusades and for trading.

Start exploring Trani by visiting the Cathedral of San Nicola Pellegrino, a Romanesque gem by the sea. The Cathedral boasts a richly decorated interior and two crypts dedicated to San Nicola and Santa Maria, along with San Leucio's hypogeum.

Not far from the Cathedral, the Swabian Castle is an imposing fortress built by Frederick II. Behind the port, you can explore the Jewish quarter of Giudecca, a maze of small alleyways, synagogues and artisans' shops. Nearby, you'll find the Villa Comunale with its relaxing seafront public gardens.

The elegant port, enclosed by the piers of Santa Lucia and Sant'Antonio, is the town's beating heart. Here you can buy fresh fish or enjoy a glass of premium Moscato wine by the sea, before diving into the local nightlife.

Take a trip, around an hour and a half, to the utterly fascinating town of Matera, renowned for its cinematic landscape and ancient cave dwellings, also known as sassi, this UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the most awe-inspiring in Italy.

The journey to the wonderful Matera will take around an hour and a half. For years and years these ‘sassi’ were used as housing for the poor and the squallored conditions were renowned. Since then, however, the area has gained something of a revival with the sassi hosting artists and hippies as well as major film productions. What’s more is that Matera has been named as 2019’s European Capital of Culture indicating how things have entirely flipped for the area.

The third-longest continuously inhabited human settlement in the world, when you visit the sassi, it seems you've been transported back to the ancient Holy Land which is why perhaps the area has often been used to depict biblical scenes for TV and film, including ‘Passion of the Christ’. This is a truly unique and remarkable place just begging to be discovered. You will return to your hotel in the evening time, after a fascinating day.
