The charming town of Ruvo di Puglia is awash with charm and culture, with its beautiful historic buildings lining its winding laneways and squares.
Located in the province of Bari, Ruvo di Puglia is known for its wine, olive oil and its pottery. It is, on the whole, a quiet and peaceful, wonderfully Italian town, but it is not short on fantastic places to eat or to sample the area’s delicious wine. Hours can be whiled away, sauntering the cobblestoned streets, looking up at the beautiful architecture seen in the many churches and cathedrals here, and stopping for a drink or an authentic and delicious Puglian meal.
You’ll find the Jatta National Archaeological Museum here too featuring a fascinating collection of pottery and vases dating as far back as the 4th century A.D. The museum gives a great insight into Ruvo di Puglia’s history and history buffs are bound to be impressed by the vast multitude of ancient artefacts.
The town is not far from the impressive Castel del Monte, a 13th century citadel and castle situated on a hill in Andria in the Apulia region. It was built during the 1240’s, by the Emperor Frederick II and it is now protected as a World Heritage Site.
It is also within easy reach of Puglia’s capital, Bari, by train. It takes just under an hour to get to and it is truly a beautiful city that blends history with a youthful vibrance. It is well worth a visit and makes for the perfect day trip from Ruvo di Puglia.

For years and years these ‘sassi’ were used as housing for the poor and the squallored conditions were renowned. Since then, however, the area has gained something of a revival with the sassi hosting artists and hippies as well as major film productions. What’s more is that Matera has been named as 2019’s European Capital of Culture indicating how things have entirely flipped for the area.
The third-longest continuously inhabited human settlement in the world, when you visit the sassi, it seems you've been transported back to the ancient Holy Land which is why perhaps the area has often been used to depict biblical scenes for TV and film, including ‘Passion of the Christ’. This is a truly unique and remarkable place just begging to be discovered. You will return to your hotel in the evening time, after a fascinating day.Close window
