Rich in history, yet brimming with a youthful joie de vivre, Puglia’s capital, Bari strikes the perfect balance between old-world charm a southern Italian town and the urban cool of a bustling city.

Home to a large university, and known for its healthy nightlife, there’s alway a hustle bustle in the Bari air. Its picturesque old town – which is filled with narrow, winding streets – houses the remains of St. Nicholas, aka Santa Clause, in its Basilica di San Nicola, along with a strapping castle and plenty of restaurants, cafés and souvenir shops to keep you occupied. You’ll also find churches and monuments here, each boasting their own fascinating story and appeal.

Its new town, on the other hand, is as it says on the tin – modern. Broad avenues lined by elegant buildings, dominate the landscape here. You’ll find a nice park, where you can while away some sun-soaked hours, and you can pay a visit the opera house, and peruse the various shops, restaurants and bars.

Don’t leave Bari without trying the delicious Sgagliozze, aka polenta fritters. These tasty treats are the late night snack of choice for the residents of Bari, and super delicious! Don’t worry if polenta is not your thing, however, as Bari produces a lot of top notch treats, including excellent Focaccia, and oodles of lip-smacking, fresh fish.
