Known as a 'Scandinavian Treasure' since becoming the venue for the 1994 Winter Olympics - and now gearing up to host the 2016 Winter Youth OIympics - Lillehammer is a picture postcard town combining traditional Norwegian charm with modern Scandinavian style. The main ski area of Hafjell, easily accessed by bus, offers a great range of runs for beginners and intermediate skiers and if you want to stretch yourself, some of the pistes used for the Winter Olympics are available for skiing. Lift queues are virtually unheard of, with 16 ski lifts providing access to 40km of slopes and a gondola carrying up to 2,400 passengers per hour. An excellent ski school provides group and private lessons with English speaking instructors.
