The narrow cobbled streets and pedestrian centre of Zell am See give it an old world charm which is quite unique. An attractive lakeside setting and wooded slopes make this one of the prettiest resorts in Austria. The medieval centre has quaint shops, colourful pavement cafés, wine bars and restaurants. Topflight has a number of family run pensions in this charming town, offering a homely atmosphere with easy access to the town centre.
This season, for the first time, all 138km of pistes in the region can be covered in artificial snow if needs be. The 54 modern cable car and lift facilities - among them the new gondolas of Schmittenbahn which have been redesigned by Porsche Design - make the ascent to the summits a real pleasure.
Novices will soon advance to the gentle slopes of the Schmittenhöhe Bowl at the Areitalm. The intermediate skier is best catered for here, with a superb range of blue and red runs on the Schmittenhöhe in Zell am See and from the top of the glacier in Kaprun. It is also advisable to buy the Region Ski Pass, which includes the ski bus between both resorts. More advanced skiers will delight in the range of skiing, from the wide open pistes to superb deep powder in the glacier bowl. Snowboarding is very popular. The Schmittenhohe offers superb surfing possibilities and there is a permanent half-pipe with challenging jumps and ramps.
