About Madeira
New to Topflight’s programme for 2009/10, the Portuguese island of Madeira is an ideal winter sun destination with its mild climate, dramatic coastline and abundant plant life. The island does not have sandy beaches, but is renowned for its unspoilt scenery, warm and friendly people, fantastic watersports and old world charm. You can play golf, go scuba diving, dolphin or whale watching, or simply relax by a pool in stunning surroundings. The most popular souvenirs here are wickerwork, embroidery and, of course, Madeira wine. The island also boasts some outstanding gardens and if you’d like to plan a group holiday for your gardening group or association, this is the perfect destination! Just contact our Tailormade Department on 01 240 1701 and let us make it happen.
On New Year’s Eve Madeira’s spectacular fireworks display is best viewed from the harbour where cruise ships anchor specifically for the event. And the annual Carnival for Mardi Gras (13th-16th February 2010) is a celebration of colourful street parades, fantastic entertainment and Brazilian style revelry, all of which have marked it as one of the best carnivals in Europe.
Funchal
The capital of the archipelago, Funchal on the south coast of the island is a bustling city set in a natural amphitheatre that tumbles down to the harbour and yacht marina. The lido promenade has developed into an extensive leisure zone with public swimming pools, sports activities, snack bars, restaurants and much more. Elsewhere in Funchal you will find an abundance of restaurants, bars, shops and local market. You can play golf, go fishing, scuba diving, whale and dolphin watching, or simply relax by a pool in stunning surroundings.
